The Trinity Tidings - October 2011

From the Pastors:

Advent nears! We come to the end of the Church Year in November and begin the new year a full month ahead of the rest of the world! In Advent we celebrate God's mighty decision to engage the world of sin and sorrow one-on-one and bring life and immortality to light! I love Advent!

We also get ready for the changes coming in January to our worship and learning life together. Remember - our Worship service schedule goes through some changes at the end of December:

Christmas Eve: Same worship service schedule as always –5pm, 7pm and 11pm

Christmas Day (Sunday, December 25) One worship service at 10 am - no Sunday School

New Year's Day (Sunday, January 1st) One worship service at 10 am - no Sunday School

January 8th- First Sunday of the New Schedule

For the health and well being of our Mission Center at 30th and Redick - we need to devote a full two hours a week of our lives (please note that is just a little over 1% of your 168 hours per week) to learning together, planning together, and preparing ourselves for our mission into the world. I hope you'll spend two hours a week with your sisters and brothers at Trinity preparing for the other one hundred sixty six. You owe it to yourself. You're worth it!

Pastor John

"In the Sanctuary"

November brings changes in seasons of the church as well as in the weather. Since May the church has been worshiping through the "Sundays after Pentecost".  The color on the altar has been the green of ordinary time. November begins with "All Saints Sunday" when we remember those who have died in the past year. The color on the altar will be white. November 13 is our last "ordinary" day of the year.  November 20 brings the Church Year to an end with the celebration of "Christ the King". The altar will again be white for this day. November 23 is our service of Thanksgiving. The following Sunday, the 27th, is the first Sunday of the new church year.  It is the "First Sunday of Advent,” and the altar color changes to blue. Advent is a time we focus on waiting for Christmas and the birth of Jesus, and on preparing our hearts to welcome the living God who wants to come into the hearts of all God's children. We use the time to get ready, to hope, to listen, to share.

Poinsettia Orders

November 20th, 27th & December 4th

This year we will once again be ordering poinsettias to decorate the church for Christmas. The flowers may be purchased in memory or honor of someone. Each plant costs $7.00 and order envelopes will be available in the red books on said dates.  Last year the turn out was great, we are hoping for the same this year!

After the dinner there is worship at 7pm. The offering at the Thanksgiving worship will be sent to Lutheran Metro Ministries, to help with their mission. We hope to see everyone here!

New Plans for Homework Help

The homework help for the Sudanese children is very successful. I have a lot of kids who are hungry for knowledge and great volunteers. For me it is important that the kids get a broad knowledge about art, music, theater etc. That’s the reason why I decided to change the idea of the homework help a little bit. My plan is to organize a monthly event for the kids. A monthly event could be a visit to the Joslyn Museum or the Rose Theater. But there will also be special cooking events (for example baking cookies at Christmas time). A very fantastic thing for my kids would be if we could visit a farm and see how cows are milked. In this way the children learn a lot of things around making cheese, cream and so on.

The reason why I tell you this is because I hope you can help me with organizing these events. It would be great if some of you have a talent for example crafting, paint in watercolors etc., which he or she wants to share with the kids. Also very welcome are all kinds of donations (food, tickets for events etc.)

Please give me a call the Church office or send me an e-mail julia@trinityomaha.org

Best wishes,

Julia
